Leipzig-Halle as the european gateway and import location

Logistics setups at import sites often carry out bundling and distribution in a superregional and international context. For example, they provide bundled delivery and then dispersion of goods produced abroad, mainly overseas. The distribution focus typically covers large areas, as several countries or even entire continents are serviced with goods from this location.

Companies in the technology, electronics, fashion and investment goods sectors are often found here. The goods produced overseas are imported in the most efficient manner, often via airports for the high-price sector and otherwise by container via ports. The goods are subsequently brought to the warehousing location via inland transport and from there are distributed via road network to the end customer shortly after the order is placed.

Typical Investor Needs at Import Locations

  • Flexible infrastructure
  • Connection to international gateway (freight airport or container port)
  • Good, multimodal inland connection, possibly via combined transport
  • Moderate parcel and wage costs (second in importance after good infrastructure)
  • Setup support for large logistics investments

The comparison of specific requirements for a European gateway with those offered by the Leipzig-Halle region show that almost all requirements are fulfilled or even exceeded. Especially the infrastructure required by this type is well represented with numerous motorways and the high-capacity freight airport. Only in the area of multimodal connections are improvements possible. In this regard, better use of local inland canals is desirable. In contrast, the most important route for goods, roads and rail, are very well integrated and can both be used at multiple locations, a reason why the overall hinterland connections in the region are very good.

Overall, the large amount of open land, relatively low property and labour costs, a good supply of local logistics service providers and the prominent setup support for logistics investors makes the Leipzig-Halle region attractive across the board for this type of logistics.
